How to use a gooseneck Tsubame coffee kettle

Tsubame gooseneck coffee kettle, also known as a pour-over kettle, is a specialized type of kettle that is designed for use in the preparation of pour-over coffee. It has a gooseneck spout that allows for precise control of the flow of water when pouring over ground coffee beans. Here is a general guide on how to use a coffee kettle:

1. Fill the kettle with water

First, fill the kettle with cold water. The amount of water you need will depend on the size of your coffee brewing device and the number of cups you are making. Generally, a good rule of thumb is to use around 1 cup (8 ounces) of water for every 1-2 cups of coffee.

2. Heat up the water

Place the kettle on the stove and turn on the heat. Bring the water to a boil, or to the desired temperature for your coffee beans. The ideal brewing temperature for coffee is around 84-92°C.

3. Grind the coffee beans

While the water is heating, grind your coffee beans to a medium to medium-fine grind size. The grind size will depend on your brewing device and personal preference.

4. Set up your brewing device

Once the water is heated, set up your brewing device. If you are using a pour-over cone or a French press, place a paper filter in the cone or insert the plunger. Add the ground coffee to the filter or press.

5. Pour the water

Once the brewing device is set up, use the Tsubame spout of the coffee kettle to pour the hot water over the ground coffee. Pour slowly and evenly, taking care to wet all of the grounds. The brewing process should take around 3-4 minutes for pour-over coffee, or 4-5 minutes for French press coffee.

6. Savour your perfect cup of coffee

Once the brewing process is complete, remove the filter or plunger and serve the coffee or enjoy it yourself!

Key points to keep in mind:

  • Water quality: The quality of the water you use can impact the taste of the final product. It is generally recommended to use purified or bottled water, as tap water can contain impurities or contaminants that can affect the taste of the coffee.
  • Water temperature: The water temperature can also affect the taste of the final product. As mentioned earlier, the ideal brewing temperature for coffee is around 195-205°F. If the water is too hot, it can extract bitter flavors from the coffee beans. If it is too cool, it may not extract enough flavor from the beans.
  • Grind size: The grind size of the coffee beans can also impact the final product. As mentioned earlier, a medium to medium-fine grind size is generally recommended for pour-over coffee. A finer grind size may be used for espresso, while a coarser grind size may be used for French press coffee.
  • Brewing time: The brewing time can also affect the final product. For pour-over coffee, a brewing time of around 3-4 minutes is generally recommended. For French press coffee, a brewing time of around 4-5 minutes is generally recommended.
  • Cleaning and maintenance: It is important to clean and maintain your coffee kettle regularly to ensure that it is in good working condition. The kettle should be rinsed with water and wiped down after use. If the spout becomes clogged, it can be cleaned using a small brush or toothpick.
